Trip Itinerary
Day 1: Departure from USA. Day 2: Arrival. Visit the Basilica of St. Paul outside the Wall where the body of St. Paul is buried. It is the 2nd largest basilica in Rome and the 5th in the world. Check in the hotel and rest for a few hours if time permits. Please note, check in at the hotel may be done before visiting the Basilica of St. Paul depending on time of arrival. In the afternoon, we will be visiting St. Mary Major, the main Basilica dedicated to Mary in Rome. We will see the remains of Jesus' manger, the tomb of Bernini, the remains of St. Matthew the Evangelist, the tomb of St. Jerome, and the oldest icon in the world of the Virgin Mary painted by St. Luke: the famous Salus Populi Romani. Visit St. Alfonso church which houses the original icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Visit the Basilica St. Prassede which holds the pillar of which Jesus was scourged. Casual dress. Dinner and overnight in Rome. Day 3: Late Start. In the morning visit the Colosseum, the symbol of the city of Rome, is a great building that has been standing since 80 A.D. Visit the church of San Clemente which goes four levels down under the Church to ancient Rome and the time of the Apostles. In the afternoon, go to St. John Lateran, the first Basilica ever to be built in the Roman Empire. Across the street, visit the Scala Sancta ~ they are the steps leading up to the praetorium of Pontius Pilate in Jerusalem on which Jesus Christ stepped on his way to trial during the Passion. Visit the Basilica di Santa Croce of Gerusalemme which houses the relics of the Passion. Then, visit the breathtaking catacombs where 500,000 people were buried. Back at the hotel around 5:30 pm. Rest for an hour. Dinner around the hotel area at 6:45 pm. Red and white wine included. Dinner and overnight in Rome. Day 4: Start the day by visiting the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel (the Pope's private Chapel) and St. Peter's in the Vatican, the largest Basilica in the world. Long pants, capris, or skirts below the knee, shoulders covered. In the afternoon our private bus will take us to enjoy a wine tasting and free time in Santa Maria in Trastevere, the most famous quarter of Rome for its beauty and quaintness. Dinner and overnight in Rome. Day 5: Private bus around 7:30 am to the Vatican to experience the 10:00 am Audience with the Pope. We will see the Pope very closely; sometimes we even shake his hand. We will visit the Spanish Steps. This is the place where the Romans hung out. Walk to Trevi Fountain for lunch and shopping. Walk to Pantheon, the oldest functional building in the world and then to the great artistic place of Piazza Navona around 4:30 pm. Dinner at Piazza Navona. Red and white wine included. Casual Dress throughout the day. Overnight in Rome. Day 6: After breakfast, depart Rome for Assisi. Visit Santa Maria degli Angeli where the Porziuncula is located ~ a medieval chapel that is said to be where St. Francis died. Visit the tombs of St. Francis and St. Clare; enjoy a peaceful walk on the streets of Assisi. Visit the convent of San Damiano where St. Clare lived and died. Dinner and overnight in Assisi. Day 7: After breakfast, visit the Rocca Maggiore ~ a grand castle dating back to the 12th century that dominates the region since it is perched atop a walled hilltop overlooking the city of Assisi and surrounding towns with spectacular views. This is a walking tour to climb and visit the Rocca Maggiore. Free afternoon in Assisi. Dinner and overnight in Assisi. Day 8: After breakfast, visit Eremo della Carceri ~ a retreat high in the mountains above Assisi where St. Francis frequently stayed to meditate and pray. It's a 40 minute uphill walk to peace and serenity of if you aren't up to the walk take a taxi. After lunch, visit the Santa Maria delle Rose Maria Exhibition created by Guido Dettoni della Grazia ~ a truly moving experience. Dinner and overnight in Assisi. Day 9: Departure for USA. Please note: We do our best to ensure that all sites listed in this itinerary will be seen. However, due to scheduling conflicts, or other circumstances beyond our control, sites may be visited on a different day than listed. If this happens it will also necessitate a change in the restaurant for dinner. However, we will never sacrifice the quality of the meal, all restaurants will meet Proximo Travel's very high standards. Since we have several different trip configurations touring at the same time, it is likely that groups on different tours will be combined when their itineraries overlap in certain areas.
